PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

1.Internalization of Management Famous American scholars as dean of the school leads an international faculty team including Chinese and foreign experts. 2.Internationalization of Undergraduate Curriculum System Refer to the curriculum systems in material science and engineering major of many famous international universities and design a professional curriculum system which is in line with international standards. 3.English Immersion Education Except humanities and social sciences and some optional courses, all compulsory major courses are taught in English and use original English textbooks. 4.Internationalization of Teaching and Learning Approach All the core modules are lectured by experienced foreign teachers. They will introduce student centered, research-based teaching and learning methods and multiform assessment system. Students will implement the whole study program by attending lectures, group discussion, and lab section and research project. 5.Outstanding Exchange Programs

  • Summer School: two to three weeks summer school program for 3rd year students in Oxford University, Imperial College London, UK, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, Linköping University, Sweden etc.
  • One Semester Exchange Program: Short exchange program in more than 20 oversea universities for 2nd and 3rd year students.
  • Overseas Graduate internship: One or two years joint research program for Master and PhD students in University of Akron, US, Imperial College London, Oxford University, UK, etc

International School of Advanced Materials is part of the Network of International Centers for Education in China (NICE), which was co-launched by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of China (SAFEA) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2013. NICE supports universities in establishing their own international schools by introducing international faculty members led by an internationally renowned dean, as well as a set of special academic policies that encourage international collaboration. It is attempted to help Chinese universities explore an innovative model of developments in higher education, researches, and administration, incorporating Western higher education practices into China to develop a better approach for Chinese higher education. Up to date, 13 schools of this kind at various subjects have been authorized in top universities across China.

International School of Advanced Materials is built on the academic strength of the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) in SCUT. SMSE conducts research in the fields of optoelectronic materials and devices, special glass fiber materials and laser, electric materials, functional polymers, rubber and plastics, ceramics and concrete, biomedical materials, and so on. It boasts a State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, a National Engineering Research Center, two Key Laboratories of Ministry of Education, and four Key Laboratories of Guangdong Province. In 2016, SMSE had more than 300 SCI papers published in top journals including Science, Nat. Photonics, Adv. Mater., Small, APL, J. Am. Ceram. Soc., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew Chem., etc. It also obtained scientific research fund of about 20 million USD and 120 patents.

This newly established International school is consisted of an international faculty team led by Prof Stephen Z. D. Cheng. Based on the materials science and engineering discipline, the school has two joint programs, Joint Program for Bachelor and Master Degree and Joint Program for Bachelor and PhD Degree. All the programs are designed for training students to have profound knowledge in scientific theories, excellent skills in professional practices, innovative awareness and competence, independent research capacity, international competitive strength,enterprising spirit, and global vision. In order to achieve this goal, the school has introduced curriculum system from famous international universities and designed all major courses taught in English.

  • Those who have not tested for HSK, IELTS or TOEFL in the application year can apply to attend the Language Proficiency Test held by the School of International Education, SCUT. Student’s test scores will be considered in the admission process.
