1. The aim

1.1 The Ph.D. in environmental engineering is pursued by students who love the country and the communist party, insist the basic principle of the party, comply with the law. With a good moral, strictness, enterprise, the candidate devotes oneself to the national modernization career.

1.2 The Ph.D. candidate should have both the broad theoretical fundamentals and systematic and in-depth knowledge. He/she should have the initiative to update his/her knowledge following the latest technology development, and has potentials to make creative achievement in the fields of theoretical study, experimental study or technical study.

1.3 The main training objective of the Ph.D. program is to making study in the fields of environmental pollution & health, the treatment techniques of POPs, solid waste recycle and safe disposal, environmental pollution modeling and control, recycling economy, clean manufacture, with the methods and measures of applied physical chemistry, microbiology, material science and ecology. The current research focus on several areas, including the early effect of toxic organic pollutions on human health, the mechanisms responsible for degradation and biological purification of toxic organic pollution under extreme conditions (e.g. radial, hypercritical, ferromagnetic, etc.), the study on the pollution control of soil, air and groundwater and bioremediation, the development of new knowledge and methods for the resource recovery. The goal of the program is to enhance the development of each student's creativity and independence in the research of environmental pollution control and management.

2. Academic years 2.1. 3-4 years for full-time Ph.D. candidate 2.2. 4-4.5 years for M.S.-Ph.D. candidate 2.3. 4-6 years for part-time Ph.D. student

3. Representative research areas 3.1. The distribution, transfer, transform of the environmental toxic pollutants and interaction at the interface 3.2. The exposure of human to the environmental toxic pollutants and its early effects on human health 3.3. The control and treatment of toxic pollutants 3.4. The control theory and methods of contaminated radiations 3.5. The novel techniques for pollution monitoring and observation 3.6. The theory and technology on physico-chemical treatment of toxic pollutants 3.7. Resource recovery and safe disposal of hazardous solid waste 3.8. Green technology and clean manufacture 3.9. The preparation and principles of the materials for environmental pollution control

4.2. Credit requirements At least 16 credits is required for full-time Ph.D. candidate. The curriculum includes two general courses, one core course and one seminar. The credit requirement for part-time Ph.D. student is the same as full-time student. For improving high quality of research, the Ph.D. student is required to give five oral presentations and publish three technical papers during the Ph.D. study.

5. Research and doctoral dissertation

5.1 Preliminary report

(1) The student chooses area of research, which should focus on the latest research directions on the national and international level, or the significant and key technical application of environmental engineering in national economy.

(2) Requirement: Before the student begins the preliminary report about his or her research, the student should first take courses as the program required (16 subject units is the minimum for Ph.D. student) and complete two to three reports on literature review or some seminar reports after participating the research meeting.

(3) Each student need to complete a preliminary report (8000 words) within the first year. In the report the student discusses his/her research proposal, including the reviews of literature, the objectives and scopes of his/her research, the key points of the study, and the plan for future work. The amount of cited literature should not be less than 50 in the preliminary report.

(4) An examination committee consisting of seven faculty (in which at least four professors) review the preliminary report of Ph.D. student. The student should present a public oral report to the faculty and each presentation is followed by a question and answer period. Upon the satisfactory completion of the preliminary report, the student is admitted to Ph.D. candidacy.

5.2 Interim examination At the middle point of research for Ph.D. degree, the student must schedule a meeting with his/her doctoral thesis committee and report the progress to the committee to make sure the study is confined within the scope as reported in the preliminary report and the research work is conducting according to schedule.

5.3 Doctoral dissertation and defence

(1) Qualification A. The requirements for doctoral dissertation is satisfied according to regulations of Shanghai University and the School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering. B. The doctoral candidate is required to participate in 30 doctoral seminars. C. The student writes a doctoral dissertation describing research result. The dissertation first should be reviewed by the supervisor and other two to three faculty. The committee indicates its approval of the dissertation before the process moves to the next step.

(2) Successful completion of preliminary oral defence

(3) Examination and oral defence The copies of a complete written thesis will be sent to eleven to fifteen examiners for correspondence review and it is required that at least 8 examiners approve the thesis for doctoral oral defence. After the dissertation is amended following the comments of examiners, an oral defence will be scheduled. If a student fails the thesis oral examination, please refer to related regulations issued by Graduate Studies, Shanghai University. The review process of doctoral thesis and the requirements of doctoral oral defence is accordance with "The Regulations on Conferment of Graduate Degree in Shanghai University".
