5. Research and Dissertations

5.1 Proposal

5.1.1 The theme The dissertation should be relevant with frontiers of condensed matter physics or relevant with great techniques concerning national economy.

5.1.2 Prerequisites   Doctoral candidates are required to obtain credits required (at least 22 credits) and submit 2-3 literature reading reports or seminar reports and an 8000 word report concerning literature reading.

5.1.3 Requirements    Three-academic-year doctoral candidates are required to submit a plan concerning dissertation within one year after the enrollment, in-service doctoral candidates and master-doctoral candidates are required to finish the report within 2 years. The report should include literature summary, the meaning of the dissertation, research aim, difficulties, features, expected results, would-be innovations, etc. Quoted literatures should be at least 50.

5.1.4 Check and approval   Public seminars are required. Seven or more teachers with senior academic titles (including 4 professors) should attend the presentation and give their comment; the writing of the dissertation can be prepared after the pass of the check.

5.2 In-progress report At the middle of writing, candidates should submit reports concerning dissertation so as to ensure the dissertation may proceed as schedule. If the warp is rather big, warning will be given.

5.3 Oral defense of the dissertation

5.3.1 Qualifications Before the oral defense, candidates are required to finish dissertation and pass the check and recheck. Also they should have 3 papers published in key periodicals and should submit at least 5 seminar summaries which have gotten their tutors' comments and then oral defense can be applied for.

5.3.2 Dissertation examination and approval in form of correspondence and oral defense Doctoral dissertation should be checked by 7-9 experts belonging to one specialty in the form of correspondence. Oral defense can be held with all experts' agreements. If the oral defense fails, the dissertation should be dealt with according to regulations made by Graduate Department.
