1. Objective of the Program

1.1 The doctoral candidates are expected to do the following: to master Marxism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory; to adhere to CPC fundamental political line; to have a great affection for our motherland; to follow disciplines and obey laws; to have good moralities; to be rigorous in study style; to be enterprising and ambitious; to be devoted to the cause he (she) aspires; to actively participate socialist modernization drive.

1.2 The doctoral candidates are also required to lay a solid foundation in basic theories and acquire systematic& profound specialized knowledge; to be proficient in using a foreign language; to obtain preliminary knowledge in a second foreign language; to be able to conduct scientific research independently; to achieve creative results in his (her) dissertation.

1.3 It adopts the theories and methods of the modern physics to investigate the interactions between electromagnetic wave and matter from microwave and optical frequencies. The current experimental expertise and the new research achievement on solid state electronics are also utilized in the discipline to investigate the generation, transmission, distribution, exchange, disposition and storage of information. The graduates cultivated in this discipline have solid theoretical base and ability of application and research.

4.2 Credit Demand (1) For three-academic-year doctoral candidates: at least 20credits, including 2 common courses 1 basic course, 1 special course and 1 seminar. (2) For master-doctor degree candidates: at least 68 credits, the doctor course is the same as three-academic-year doctoral candidate. (3) For in-service Doctoral candidates: the same as the three-academic-year doctoral candidates while the course selectivity is according to the business.

4.3 doctoral candidates are required to participate in or give 3 seminars during academic years and publish 3 papers.

5. Research and Dissertations

5.1 Proposal

5.1.1 The theme The dissertation should be relevant with frontiers of condensed matter physics or relevant with great techniques concerning national economy.

5.1.2 Prerequisites Doctoral candidates are required to obtain credits required and submit 2-3 literature reading reports or seminar reports.

5.1.3 Requirements Three-academic-year doctoral candidates are required to submit an 8000 word report within one year after the enrollment, in-service doctoral candidates and master-doctoral candidates are required to finish the report within 2 years. The report should include literature summary, the meaning of the dissertation, research aim, difficulties, features, expected results, would-be innovations, etc. Quoted literatures should be at least 50.

5.1.4 Check and approval Public seminars are required. Seven or more teachers with senior academic titles (including 4 professors) should attend the presentation and give their comment; the writing of the dissertation can be prepared after the pass of the check.

5.2 In-progress report At the middle of writing, candidates should submit reports concerning dissertation so as to ensure the dissertation may proceed as schedule. If the warp is rather big, warning will be given.

5.3 Oral defense of the dissertation

5.3.1 Qualifications Before the oral defense, candidates are required to have 3 papers published in key periodicals Candidates should submit at least 3 seminar summaries which have gotten their tutors' comments and then oral defense can be applied for. Before the oral defense, candidates are required to finish dissertation and pass the check and recheck.

5.3.2 Dissertation examination and approval in form of correspondence and oral defense Doctoral dissertation should be checked by 7-9 experts belonging to one specialty in the form of correspondence. Oral defense can be held with more than 5 experts' agreements. If the oral defense fails, the dissertation should be dealt with according to regulations made by Graduate Department.

  • To be eligible, applicants should be non-Chinese citizens with a valid ordinary-type passport, and in good health, and have attained the Master's degree. 
  • HSK 4 above 180 for Art;
  • HSK 4 above 195 for Science or Engineering;
  • HSK 4 above 210 for Economics or Management;
  • HSK 5 above 180 for Humanities.

Note: 1. Graduates who did not receive their degree certificates at the time of application should provide pre-graduation certificates issued by their schools or colleges to prove their ability to graduate smoothly and obtain their degree certificates by July 2019 2. According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education of China, those who immigrated to other countries from the Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan and applying to study in Shanghai University as international students, should meet the following additional requirements: the applicants must hold valid passport or other relevant international recognized documents for at least 4 years; meanwhile, in the latest 4 years (by each April 30th of the year of University registration), the applicants must have lived overseas for 2 years (Living overseas for 9 months can be converted to 1 year, which is subject to the exit-entry stamp on visa.)
