1.4 The specialty of control theory and control engineering is the main branch under the first grade specialty of control science and engineering. This specialty of our university emphasizes particularly on applications of advanced control theories and research of novel automatic systems. The setting courses reflect the up to date development at this field both in domestic and overseas. Our cultivation aim is to make the candidate have solid theoretical basic of control and specialized knowledge of computer control and control engineering. We request the cultivation of candidates should be sufficiently combined with preceding study of the research area or important applications in the country economy. The candidate will be requested to obtain some creative results before his graduate, and to have the independent ability in research or in development after his graduate.

2. Study period for doctorial degree applicants in Shanghai University 1) Study period for doctorial degree applicant is 3 years. 2) Study period for post-doctorial degree applicant is 4.5-5 years. 3) Study period for doctorial degree applicant on-the-job is 4-6 years.

5. Scientific research and thesis work

5.1 Doctorial degree applicant instruction group The cultivation of doctorial applicant practice supervisor responsibility, an instruction group of 3-5 persons led by supervisor is required to set up and the group participate in the making of cultivation plan and check the study and thesis work of doctorial applicant.

5.2 Literary summary report Applicant is required to broadly read domestic and overseas literature centered research direction and actual scientific task with the instruction of supervisor while applicant takes courses learning.

5.3 Demonstration report Doctorial degree applicant is required to study out and make demonstration report through literature reading and investigation according to requirements of system, advancement and creativity. Above 7 professors and associate professors should listen to the report and among attendees there are at least 4 professors. Applicant is required make a discussion concerning the scientific bases, aim, meaning, content, expected purpose, research method, topical condition & schedule and the like of his or her selective topic and listen to suggestions. Attendees decide whether or not pass the demonstration report and after the pass of the report applicant is required to do research and thesis work, currently an above 8000 words demonstration report should be finished at the second academic year.

5.4 Middle term examination: a middle term exam is held at the second semester of the second academic year according to the uniform regulations of Shanghai University.

5.5 Thesis period report: an about 2000 words thesis period report is required when applicant achieve period result and currently a period report should be made at least once at the second academic year.

6. Academic action

6.1 At least participate in domestic and overseas academic meeting once during doctorial period.

6.2 At least two papers published in domestic or overseas important journals (with published or be accepted) during the doctorial period. At least one of them should be cited by SCI, EI or ISTP, and at least one of them should be written by foreign language.

6.3 At least make 3 seminars during doctorial period.

7. Thesis requirements

7.1 Doctorial is required to finish doctorial thesis independently with the help of supervisor and instruction group and at least 2 years should be used to carry out science and thesis.

7.2 Doctorial theses should be systematically complete academic theses, have the theoretic meaning or practical meaning, achieve creative results on scientific area or special area. Thesis emphasizes particularly on application theory research should be based on engineering background and have new opinion on theory. The achievement of thesis emphasizes particularly on the development and research high-technology or grand engineering technology can be used, and the achievement should have potential economic profit or social profit.

7.3 Doctorial thesis is the important criteria to scale doctorial degree applicant cultivation quality and academic level. The thesis should embody solid&broad basic theories and systematic&profound specialized knowledge on specialties, have ability to undertake science research independently, thesis should reflect the academic level of the author systematically, creatively with advanced features.

7.4 Preliminary oral defense should be held 3 months before the formal oral defense. Only the doctorial candidate who passed the preliminary oral defense can carry out formal oral defense. The exam and approve practiced by Shanghai University and Shanghai city and the publication of academic dissertation are dealt with according to relevant regulations of Shanghai University.
