Doctoral1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good physical and mental health, aged 18 or above and possess a valid foreign passport.
-Applicants for a doctoral degree programs should be under the age of 40.
2. The eligibility for applicants who hold a foreign passport but used to be a Chinese citizen will be in accordance with Document No.83 (2009) of the PRC Ministry of Education.
3. Educational Background:
-Applicants for a doctoral degree program must hold a master's degree or above.
-Applicants who have not graduated yet must submit an expected graduation certificate / document certified by their current institution. It should contain the expected date of graduation. When admitted to SDU, the applicant must provide an original graduation certificate upon registration. Failure to do so will invalidate their admission offer.
4. Language Proficiency Certificate
- [For Chinese Taught] New HSK Level 6 (180 points or higher).
- [For English Taught] All applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit the results of the IELTS (6.0 or above) or iBT TOEFL (80 or above, institution code: C296) or other equivalent certificates of English proficiency.
*)The exception of the English proficiency test requirement is for applicants who have obtained their highest degree in an institution where the primary language of instruction was English/Chinese. Official proof must be submitted in this case.
Note: Successful applicants must pay Registration Fee RMB 400 to school upon registration.
Application Documents :
1. Personal information page of the passport (regular personal passport valid beyond March 1, 2026)
2. Undergraduate diploma/degree certificate and master's diploma/degree or pre-graduation certificate (the pre-graduation certificate must be stamped with the school seal, indicating the expected graduation date, and the graduation and degree certificates must be obtained before the registration date of the corresponding year)
3. Transcripts of all undergraduate and master courses (stamped with the school seal)
4. Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors (or experts with equivalent professional titles) related to the applied program. The recommendation letters should include the referrer's name (handwritten signature), position, institution, telephone number and email address.
5. Letter of motivation in Chinese or English
Applicants should follow the template provided by our university (please download the template from: https://www.istudy.sdu.edu.cn/English/Home.htm - "Download"). Applicants for Chinese-taught programs should write in Chinese, while applicants for English-taught programs should write in English.
6. Language proficiency certificate
The certificate should be valid, usually for a period of 2 years. If applicants provide proof of language of instruction, a school letter signed by the relevant responsible person and stamped with the school seal is required.
7. Foreigner Physical Examination Form
Applicants should undergo the examination strictly according to the required items stated in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form (please download the template from: https://www.istudy.sdu.edu.cn/English/Home.htm - "Download"). Forms will be deemed invalid if they are incomplete, lack attached photos, do not have a cross-page seal on the photo, lack a signature of the attending physician, or are without an official hospital stamp. Please ensure the physical examination remains valid during the application as the result is valid for only 6 months.
8. Certificate of No Criminal Record
Applicants must submit the Certificate of No Criminal Record issued by local public security management department. It should be valid within 6 months prior to the application date.
9. Scanned copies of the financial guarantee materials (applicants who apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship or China Studies Program and don't accept any adjustment are exempt from these requirements), including:
(1) Scanned copies of passport or identification document of the financial guarantor (limited to the applicant or immediate family member)
(2) Proof of financial support, with deposits of no less than 50,000 RMB or an equivalent amount in foreign currency
10. Applicants who meet the following criteria are required to submit the following supporting documents, including but not limited to:
(1) Residents of the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan who apply for admission to Shandong University as international students after they have immigrated and acquired the foreign nationality shall provide the following materials:
(a) Proof documents related to the renunciation of Chinese nationality
(b) Certificate of annulment of household registration in China
(c) Certificate of permanent residence in a foreign country
(d) Certificate of acquiring foreign nationality
(2) For those obtaining foreign nationality at birth, if either one or both parents are Chinese citizens, and are applying as international students, the following documents are required:
(a) Certificate of obtaining foreign nationality at birth
(b) Permanent residence permit(s), passport(s), or identification document(s) of the parent(s) (Chinese citizen(s)) before the applicant's birth in a foreign country
