The Master of China Studies is a MA-level degree program with a strong focus on China's political, economic, historical and societal context. Its interdisciplinary curriculum allows you to work analytical and gain an in-depth understanding of China. The MCS has a team of more than 20 professors for various departments and faculties to instruct and guide you through your studies and research. The practical components of the program such as workshops and fieldtrips seek to engage you in the Chinese society to further prepare you for conducting research independently and integrate your empirical knowledge. The primary instruction language is English with a rigorous Mandarin curriculum serving as an additional component to entrance your Chinese language proficiency

Graduate Destinations

The Program aims to prepare you for a career in a broad range of sectors where you can implement your knowledge on China and/or East Asian studies. However, our most graduates found themselves in certain destinations ranging from governmental agencies to research-oriented organizations such as think-tank centers or private sector firms after finishing their studies in the MCS Program.

General Qualifications

  1. Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent qualification (for Bachelor's Degree applicants) or Bachelor's Diploma (for Master's Degree applicants).
  2. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport and must comply with the relevant regulations stipulated in "Document No. 12 (2020) of the Ministry of Education of the PRC."
  3. Must be in good physical and mental health.
  4. Applicants who are still under 18 as of September (per admission year) must provide a notarized Letter of Guarantee from their designated guardian in China.


General Application Documents

1. The CSCA score is specifically required for Bachelor's Degree application. This requirement also varies for each university.

3. Recent Passport-Sized Photograph, formatted as follows: A recent full-faced photo (head must occupy 70% of the photo size); aspect ratio 4:3; white background without borders; size 100-500KB (*.jpg, *.jpeg). (bit.ly/ContohPhoto)

4. Language Proficiency Certificates:

  • English Taught: IELTS with an overall score of 5.5-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80-90 (requirements vary by university).
  • Chinese Taught: HSK 4–6 (levels and minimum scores vary by major and university).

5. Academic Diplomas: High School Diploma (for Bachelor's Degree applicants) or Bachelor's Diploma (for Master's Degree applicants). Applicants who have not yet graduated must submit an official Pre-Graduation Statement from their high school or university. (bit.ly/PreGraduationLetter)

6. Academic Transcripts: High School Transcripts (for Bachelor's Degree) or University Transcripts (for Master's Degrees), compiled into a single file. 7. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation: Required from two high school teachers (for Bachelor's Degree) or two university professors/associate professors (for Master's Degrees). 8. Study Plan or Personal Statement: Approximately 800 words, written in English or Mandarin (corresponding to the chosen language of instruction). The statement must be clearly signed by the applicant. General guidance points are available here: (bit.ly/PoinPersonalStatement)

9. Additional Requirements: Specific requirements vary by university. Examples include:

Note

  • Documents 5 through 6 MUST be in English or Mandarin and officially legalized by the issuing institution (high school or university). Alternatively, the services of a sworn translator may be utilized.
  • Please neatly scan each document into PDF format. The file size for each document must not exceed 67 MB (the passport photograph must adhere to the specific requirements listed above). All documents must then be uploaded to the system at www.greatwall.co.id.
