Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Science (Mathematics) - Mathematics and Applied Mathematics
BachelorPROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Students will initially be placed into a general-studies category as their major. After enrollment, they will be assigned at the direction of their school to a specific major.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University, initially known as Nan Yang Public School, was founded in 1896. The Department of Mathematics came to existence later, in 1928. One evidence of its place in modern mathematics in China is that the first Congress of the Chinese Mathematical Society was held in 1935 at SJTU. Its past graduates include names such as Wu Wenjun, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, known for his “Wu class” in topology; Hu Hesheng, also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Tony Cai, Winner of the COPSS Presidents’ Award; Ling Wen, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering who heads the Sheng Hua Group, a first rate coal mining company; Shen Nan Peng, a prominent figure in venture capital investment today.
In 2014, the Department of Mathematics was selected by the government as one of the first four Model Schools for Internationalization, which encourages us to be more international in its practices, vision and outlook. As the department was getting bigger, it was reorganized into the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) in December 2015. The School consists of 3 departments (Mathematics, Applied and Computational Mathematics, and Statistics) and 1 center (Research Center for Mathematics Education).
SMS is composed of 117 faculty members including 41 professors, 50 associate professors and 23 special researchers (equivalent to tenure-track assistant professors). Among the faculty, there are 98% of them holding a Ph.D degree and 40% of them graduating from an overseas university.
At undergraduate level, SJTU offer B.Sc. in Mathematics. B.Sc. in Statistics will enroll students since 2018 admission. For graduate education, a range of research and taught oriented programs are offered. Students can choose to further their doctoral study with major in Mathematics or in Statistics in SJTU. We offer as well M.Sc. in Mathematics by Research and M.Sc. in Applied Statistics by Coursework. In August 2018, SJTU welcome first batch of students enrolled in the M.Sc. in Quantitative Finance (a joint taught program with Department of Mathematics, National University of Singapore).
