Atomic and molecular physics or atomic, molecular, and optical physics (AMO) is the study of matter-matter and light-matter interactions at the scale of one or a few atoms. The three areas are closely interrelated. AMO theory includes classical, semi-classical and quantum treatments. Typically, the theory and applications of emission, absorption, scattering of electromagnetic radiation (light) from excited atoms and molecules, analysis of spectroscopy, generation of lasers and masers, and the optical properties of matter in general, fall into these categories.

(1) Coherent control of diatomic molecular dynamics, including photo dissociation, photoionization, field-free orientation, and population transfer, etc.

(2) Electronic dynamics in strong field and molecular high-order harmonic generation.

(3) Polyatomic molecular potential energy surface construction and molecular reaction dynamics.

Course Requirements

The total credits should NOT be less than 14, including at least 10 credits of compulsory courses and 4 credits of the elective.
