Program Overview

The EMA in Chinese History and Culture is a two-year program to provide opportunities for international students without prior knowledge of the Chinese language and history to study Chinese history on a Master’s level in Shanghai, one of the most exciting cities in China. All courses except Chinese language courses under the program are taught in English by our highly qualified faculty.

Courses in the program consist of three blocks

1) Chinese language courses for different levels;

2) General surveys of ancient and modern Chinese history (strong focus on political, religious and art history);

3) In-depth research courses focusing on art and religion in ancient China, history and culture of Shanghai, comparative perspectives on Chinese and other ancient civilizations.

For those who are able to follow courses in Chinese they can also choose from a wide range of courses taught in our department. Students in the program will have a unique opportunity to studying Chinese history and culture while experiencing it in person.

For students pursuing a Master’s degree, a minimum of two years is generally required in order to complete the program. They will be required to complete a total of thirty-one course credits and a dissertation written in English of no fewer than 10,000 words. The dissertation should be defended successfully before being submitted with an abstract in Chinese.
